    Non-interest Income and Bank Profitability

    In the U.S. commercial banking systems, non-interest income contributes to as much as over 40% of net operating income, compared to only 20% in 1980, which demonstrates non-interest income is playing a very important role. To test how non-interest income affects U.S. commercial banks’ profitability for recent decade, we accepted accounting ratios to measure the links between non-interest income and other factors contributing to the bank profitability from 2000 to 2010. The results show that banks with higher non-interest income normally have stronger power of profitability. It also indicates that the impact of non-interest income on bank performance can be different, depending on how performance is measured. Thus it can be a helpful complimentary for nowadays non-interest income research

    A corpus‐based discourse analysis of liberal studies textbooks in Hong Kong: legitimatizing populism

    Researchers have discussed Hong Kong’s localist identities, nativist sentiments, and populism, but have not widely examined the extent to which populism could be perceived in education in Hong Kong. As the chief participants of the Occupying Central and the radical Anti-Extradition Bill movements in Hong Kong were students, this suggests the need to explore the relationship between populism and education, particularly the then-controversial liberal studies textbooks. According to contemporary news reports, liberal studies textbooks contained much content stigmatising the Chinese mainland. Previous studies of liberal studies textbooks applied qualitative discourse analysis methods. In this study, mixed-method analysis was applied to a specialised corpus comprising seven commercial liberal studies textbooks containing 248,339 Chinese characters in total to explore the extent to which liberal studies textbooks contain information concerning the key features of populism—the heightened division between the inner and outer groups. A division was found between positive images of Hong Kong and negative images of China in the narratives of commercial liberal studies textbooks. Accordingly, the textbooks can be understood to contain populism. The present study advocates that relevant educational watchdogs in Hong Kong provide more guidance on the writing and publishing of liberal studies textbooks in the future, keeping the enquiry-based spirit of the liberal studies course fulfilled, and urges stakeholders of Hong Kong education to consider teaching peace education and developing a more inclusive environment

    An Autonomous Path Planning Method for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle based on A Tangent Intersection and Target Guidance Strategy

    Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) path planning enables UAVs to avoid obstacles and reach the target efficiently. To generate high-quality paths without obstacle collision for UAVs, this paper proposes a novel autonomous path planning algorithm based on a tangent intersection and target guidance strategy (APPATT). Guided by a target, the elliptic tangent graph method is used to generate two sub-paths, one of which is selected based on heuristic rules when confronting an obstacle. The UAV flies along the selected sub-path and repeatedly adjusts its flight path to avoid obstacles through this way until the collision-free path extends to the target. Considering the UAV kinematic constraints, the cubic B-spline curve is employed to smooth the waypoints for obtaining a feasible path. Compared with A*, PRM, RRT and VFH, the experimental results show that APPATT can generate the shortest collision-free path within 0.05 seconds for each instance under static environments. Moreover, compared with VFH and RRTRW, APPATT can generate satisfactory collision-free paths under uncertain environments in a nearly real-time manner. It is worth noting that APPATT has the capability of escaping from simple traps within a reasonable time

    A Practical Simulation Flow for Singing Capacitor based Acoustic Noise Analysis

    Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are widely used in modern electronics. Due to the piezoelectric effect of the ceramic material, however, MLCCs subjected to electrical noise may vibrate and generate acoustic noise, as \u27singing\u27. Acoustic noise can be annoying for users, especially within mobile devices, so it becomes important to perform acoustic noise analysis before a product is released. In this paper, a practical simulation flow for singing capacitor based acoustic noise is presented. The simulation flow and analysis method are developed on Ansys Sherlock and Mechanical. In Ansys Sherlock, local library and Approved Vendor List (AVL) files were used to build the model efficiently. After the PCB and all parts were set correctly, the model was imported to Ansys Mechanical for further modal analysis and harmonic analysis. Using the proposed simulation flow the simulation model could be easily created, and the inherent vibration properties and frequency response of the structure could be estimated

    Evaluation value of subjective visual quality examination on surgical indications of the early cataracts based on objective scatter index values

    AimTo evaluate the subjective visual functions of early cataracts patients and assess their surgical indications.MethodsEyes were separated into a control group (Group A without cataract) and two early cataracts groups (Group B with 2.0 ≀ OSI < 3.0 and Group C with 3.0 ≀ OSI < 4.0). The objective scatter index (OSI), modulation transfer function cut-off frequency (MTF cut-off), and Strehl ratio (SR) values were applied to measure objective visual functions. The contrast sensitivity (CS) and scores of the questionnaires (QOL and VF-14) characterized subjective visual functions. Above visual functions were compared among three groups. Postoperative visual functions in Group B and C were analyzed to assess the outcome of surgery.ResultsNinety two subjects (126 eyes) were included in the study. All objective visual function in Group B were significantly better than Group C (all P < 0.01), but worse than Group A (all P < 0.01). Except for 1.5 c/d CS, subjective visual function in Group A were significantly better than Group B and C (all P < 0.05), but there was no significant differences between Group B and C. As for eyes that underwent surgery in Group B and C, all visual functions significantly improved after surgery (P < 0.05), except for 1.5 c/d CS in Group C. There were no significant differences among the three groups after surgery.ConclusionThe subjective visual function can be impaired in early cataracts patients with OSI < 3.0, whose objective visual functions were statistically better than patients with OSI ≄ 3.0. These patients can benefit equally from surgery as patients with OSI ≄ 3.0. Subjective visual functions can be used as surgical indications for these patients
